With the use of a telephone chat on Friday, South Korean President-elect Yoon Suk-yeol and Chinese President Xi Jinping discussed bilateral cooperation for peace on the Korean Peninsula.

During the 25-minute phone chat, Yoon emphasized that the two nations should work together to achieve peace on the Korean Peninsula as well as the total disarmament of the North Korean nuclear weapons arsenals.

"Yoon stated that the South Korean people are extremely concerned about the rising tension between the two Koreas as a result of North Korea's series of intercontinental ballistic missile tests, the most recent of which was conducted on Thursday," Yoon's spokesman Kim Eun-hye said in a statement.

According to the spokesman, the two have vowed to stay in constant touch and meet with each other shortly after Yoon takes over as president.

On March 11, after receiving a congratulations letter from the Chinese Ambassador to Seoul, Xing Haiming, Yoon received another victory in the presidential election. Xi expressed his delight at Yoon's victory.

I expect to collaborate with Xi on the development of ties between our two nations, in the spirit of mutual respect and collaboration," Yoon stated in a press release.

Xi stated that Korea and China are "near neighbors unable to walk apart," and that the two nations should work together to develop a stable, long-term partnership that would benefit the people of both countries.

A high-profile communication channel has been established between the two parties, and the two have pledged to collaborate on problems ranging from supply chains to public health to climate change to the environment — especially fine dust — and culture.

It was the first time for Xi, who took over as president in March 2013, to speak by phone with the President-elect of Korea before to officially taking over the reins of the country.

During the month following his election, Yoon has spoken on the phone with several world leaders, including US President Joe Biden, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Vietnamese President Nguyen Xuan Phuc. Yoon has also spoken on the phone with British Prime Minister David Cameron and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
