Disney+, the worldwide streaming platform, premiered another Korean original series on Wednesday, the sci-fi mystery "Grid," in the hopes of boosting its stagnant performance in Korea.

The new suspense thriller is directed by Lee Khan, who previously directed the action picture "The Divine Move 2: The Wrathful" (2019). It centers on a mysterious character known as "Ghost" (Lee Si-young) who vanished after designing the Grid system that safeguarded humans from a devastating tragedy. She reappears 24 years after her disappearance and assists a serial killer in escaping.

When detective Jung Sae-byeok (Kim A-joong) learns of the strange being's existence, she teams up with government official Kim Sae-ha (Seo Kang-jun) to uncover the truth about Ghost's connection to the serial killer.

Lee Soo-yeon, the writer and producer of tvN's blockbuster murder thriller series "Stranger," penned the 10-part series.

During an online news conference on Wednesday, the director said, "It wasn't simple to make up my mind to head this series." "What struck me was the series' topic, which is 'we should protect our planet Earth.' I had been wondering why there are no series or films in Korea that discuss rescuing Earth, so I teamed up with the writer."

The director remarked that his main emphasis in developing the series was establishing a fictitious universe to the unfamiliar plot, adding that the series will be a mild sci-fi in genre with less visual effects.

"There are a lot of sci-fi components," he explained, "but our series doesn't put forth the visual effects of those; instead, it builds multiple themes that the writer intended to explore, all while being grounded in reality." "Because the plot is unusual, we spent a lot of time convincingly developing the fictitious universe."

Kim is making a comeback to television after starring in the fantasy medical drama "Live Up to Your Name" in 2017.

After reading the script, she stated she was enthralled by the story.

"I was intrigued to how the storyline progressed," she added, "and I could feel the suspense throughout this mystery thriller novel." "I was enthralled by the attention to detail and the distinct style that writer Lee possesses."

Song Eo-jin, a senior government official who works for the department that manages Grid, is played by actor Kim Mu-yeol. He has been denying the existence of Ghost, thus he is at odds with Sae-byeok and Sae-ha when they partner up to find the truth.

The actor stated his admiration for the series' scientific base, implying that it will deliver an engaging sci-fi plot with a solid foundation in fact.

"I read an article once about how the solar wind can damage the Earth, and then I read the screenplay, and I was blown away," he said. "The story was mainly based on genuine research findings, and I've heard the writer penned the story from a library, which speaks to how astounding and startling the story is."
