Red Velvet’s Yeri has a lot on her plate these days.
Not only is she preparing for her group’s sixth EP Queendom, but the girl affectionately known as Red Velvet's "evil maknae" (see video below for proof) is also gearing up for the premiere of her new web drama Blue Birthday.
Produced by Playlist, the production house behind the successful dramas A-TEEN and Love Playlist, Blue Birthday is a fantasy romance thriller in which Yeri stars opposite PENTAGON’s Hongseok. Her character Oh Ha Rin is a 28-year-old whose first love died by suicide on her 18th birthday, just when she had decided to confess her feelings to him.
A decade later, Oh Ha Rin stumbles across some photos Ji Seo Jun (her first love) left behind. After making a wish to see him one last time, she winds up going back in time.
Blue Birthday marks her very first lead role, and she won’t have an easy time of it. She’ll essentially be playing two characters: Oh Ha Rin in her teens and Oh Ha Rin in her twenties. The former is cheerful and innocent while the latter is depressed and stil struggling to cope with Ji Seo Jun’s untimely death.
“Because this is my first lead role, I put my heart and soul into preparing for it. We all worked really hard, so I have no doubt that the end result will be a great drama. I hope viewers will show support for it,” Yeri says.
Meanwhile, Yeri’s onscreen partner Hongseok says he was impressed by her personality because it made establishing a good working relationship with her much easier.
“I met her for the first time during the script reading, and she was very pleasant. We became close easily because we could communicate well. As we got closer during each shooting day, we were able to easily set up the friendship between our characters, who have been friends for ten years. Shoutout to Kim Ye Rim!” he said, using Yeri’s birth name.
In the week leading up to the announcement of Red Velvet’s new EP, Yeri starred in an archive video for their Queens Mystic General Store event on the group’s official Instagram page. Check it out below.
Blue Birthday will air its first episode on August 6 and Queendom is set to drop on August 16.
