Jo Insung's new film Escape from Mogadishu seems to be receiving all the love from the moviegoers.

The Korean Film Council declared on August 3 that “Escape from Mogadishu” had officially reached 1 million moviegoers as of 4 p.m. that day.  Because the picture was first released on July 28, it just took seven days to reach the milestone.

Notably, Escape from Mogadishu is the first Korean film to gross more than $1 million in 2021. The result is all the more remarkable in light of the Korean government's recent imposition of the strictest level of social distancing rules on the greater Seoul area, which undoubtedly had an impact on the box office.

Based on historical events, Escape from Mogadishu is a film about the life-or-death escape of South Korean and North Korean embassy personnel caught up in the Somali Civil War. The film is directed by Ryu Seung Wan, the popular director of The Battleship Island, Veteran, The Berlin File, and The Unjust.
