When we think of islands in Korea, we probably just think of Jeju and its lush nature and white sand beaches. But did you know that there are 3,358 officially affirmed islands off the South Korean coast? That means more sand beaches to visit and explore.

One of these islands is Sagot Beach, located in Baengnyeong Island. The island is situated at the tip of the northern limit line, dividing South and North Korea, where the latter is visible on a clear day.

Unlike any other beach full of colorful parasols and beach-goers, Sagot Beach was used as a natural runaway for United Nations’ aircraft during the Korean war. 

A beach as a runaway?

Yes, you read it right. While most beaches have soft sands and pebbles, the granules that compose the sand dunes of the beach are very small, making very fine gaps in between the sand. This forms a very hard layer, that makes it firm as a concrete floor.

This is the only beach in Korea where you can drive a car in the sand as wheels don’t sink. In fact, the beach is one of the only two natural airfields in the world, the other in Naples, Italy. And on December 30, 1997, it was designated as Korea’s Natural Monument No. 391.

The Sagot Sabin, which refers to a place formed by flat and wide deposits of sand, stretches 2 kilometers with an average width of 200 meters. This natural splendor is located along the coast to the southwest and southeast of the Yonggongpo river in  Baengnyeong Island.

Although anyone can visit the beach, the area remains under the control of the South Korean army and the United Nations so it is well preserved.
