A ten-minute ferry ride from Seongsangpo port, going far east of Jeju Island, is the island of Udo. The island’s name is from the Korean word (woo) 우 read as /uː/ which means cow, as it looks like a lying cow from above.
Famed for its fertile land, pristine waters, abundant school of fishes, stone walls, and picturesque nature, the island is considered as Jeju’s mini-me. Among Jeju island’s 63 annexes, Udo is the largest island with a length of 3.8 kilometers and a circumference of 17 kilometers.
As the main island is famous for its bountiful seafood harvest, Udo similarly has diverse fishing grounds. There are also many Hanyeo’s (해녀) or female divers on the island. In fact, apart from farming, fishing is their main industry.
Visitors to the island can feast on the different panoramic views it can offer. These scenic views can be basked on through different biking and hiking trails on land, and submarine and cruise tours around the island.
“Udo Inn”, a program of tvN featuring well-known actors in the country as well as EXO’s former member Kai, showcases Udo island’s charm as Korea’s potential honeymoon spot. With its beauty, it’s no question why the island is a choice for moviemakers and producers as venues for their projects.
It was also the film location for Korean masterpieces like ‘The Idle Mermaid’ and Jun Ji Hyun’s film, ‘A Love Story', which made the island more famous. These movies unveil the island’s village scenery, grassy atmosphere, and breathtaking white and black sand beaches.
The whole island and even Jeju can be viewed through the summit of Udobong Peak, which is about 132 meters above sea level. As Udo has no high mountains, the view of the beautiful scenery is outstanding.
Udo’s exquisite emerald beach and rocky cliffs comparable to that of Scotland’s, can be enjoyed while eating the island’s well-known ‘Peanut Ice Cream’. The sweet dessert uses famed locally grown nuts. Different cafés and restaurants around the island offer different varieties of this dessert.
The best time to visit the island is in the summer and spring as it can get a bit windy during the other seasons. That’s another Korean island to visit on your next trip to Korea.
