It has been confirmed that BTS will not be performing at the Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) in 2018.
"BTS was in talks to make an appearance, but it has been decided that they will not be appearing," a source from MAMA revealed to Sports Donga on December 2. Because of their busy schedule, it will be difficult to film a performance video, but we are working on a short video for their fans."
Following the discovery of the new Omicron COVID-19 variant, the South Korean government has tightened the country's entry requirements for foreign nationals. Anyone entering Korea on or after December 3 must self-quarantine for ten days, regardless of whether or not they have received vaccinations.
BTS is currently conducting activities in Los Angeles, United States. They will be performing on December 3 at the 2021 iHeartRadio Jingle Ball Tour; broadcast lives on iHeartRadio (local time). Because the 2021 MAMA will take place on December 11, it will be impossible for BTS to complete their mandatory 10-day self-quarantine in time once they arrive in Korea following their tour.
Additionally, when asked whether the offline portion of the event might be canceled as a result of the government's COVID-19 prevention measures, the source from MAMA responded, "We are monitoring the situation and will notify you if anything changes."
The MAMA 2021 ceremony will begin on December 11 at 6 p.m. KST and will be broadcast worldwide.
