Lee Jung Jae Will Not Attend 2022 Golden Globes

The pandemic is not the only reason for his absence.

Despite being nominated, Lee Jung Jae will not attend the 2022 Golden Globes.

For his role in "Squid Game," Lee Jung Jae has been nominated for Best Actor in a Television Series – Drama. "Squid Game" has also been nominated for Best Television Series – Drama, and O Yeong Su has been nominated for Best Supporting Actor – Television.

"He is tremendously happy to have been nominated in the Best Actor category at the Golden Globes, but he has opted not to attend the ceremony," Lee Jung Jae's agency, Artist Company, said on January 5. “He acknowledges that, contrary to popular belief, Netflix will not be attending the Golden Globes. He also took into account other aspects, such as the COVID-19 scenario and quarantine rules."

The Hollywood International Press Association (HFPA), which is comprised of foreign cinema journalists from various nations across the world, selects the nominees and winners for the Golden Globes. The Golden Globes have been under fire in recent years for suspicions of corruption and a lack of diversity among the HFPA's members, despite the fact that the ceremony is usually star-studded and considered as a predictor of the Academy Awards.

As a result, the Golden Globes have been widely boycotted by Hollywood. Top actors and directors have stated that they will not attend the ceremonies and will not accept any accolades that they may receive. Netflix, Amazon, and Warner Media have all stated that they will not participate in the Golden Globes or collaborate with the HFPA unless improvements are implemented. The Golden Globes' long-time broadcaster, NBC, has also backed out of its agreements to air the ceremony.

Last year, when "Minari" won the Best Foreign Language Film category at the Golden Globes despite being produced by an American production company, written and directed by a Korean-American, and focusing on the Korean-American experience, accusations of racism were made. The Golden Globes announced at the time that the film was nominated in the category since more than half of it was not in English.

Lee Jung Jae had planned to attend the Critics Choice Awards, which will take place at the same time as the Golden Globes, but had to cancel his trip to the United States owing to the COVID-19 crisis.
