Jung Woosung Opens Up on Willingness to Produce More Dramas and Films

The Silent Sea actor dishes it all out in an interview with The Korea Herald.

Jung Woo-sung, a 48-year-old accomplished actor, aspires to become a producer in order to provide viewers with stunning Korean content.

"The Silent Sea was my second experience with a short film reproduction, following the release of 'Remember You' in 2014." "I find the job of an executive producer to be difficult, but I want to continue doing it in order to bring the wonderful projects created by the talented directors to a wider audience," executive producer Jung said in an online interview on Tuesday. "I'm looking forward to continuing this work."

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actor and producer stated that he had never intended to work behind the scenes.

"As an actor, I've always dreamed of directing films or television drama series, but not of producing them. However, after hearing about the difficulties faced by young directors in our film industry, I felt compelled to assist them by introducing them to other producers in the industry. "However, there were some limitations," Jung admitted.

"I decided to be brave and do my best to showcase the projects in order to encourage the talented directors," the producer continued.

As a producer of "Remember You" and "The Silent Sea," Jung has no particular role model or specific goal, but he hopes to continue to introduce outstanding works to the public as a result of his experiences.

After being questioned about why the sci-fi mystery short film was recreated as a Netflix series, Jung stated that he believed Netflix was the ideal partner for a variety of reasons.

"At one point, the project was considered for a feature film. Nevertheless, because Korean science fiction films do not have a good reputation in the domestic market, there was a risk that the film would dilute the unique charm of the original 'The Silent Sea.'"

"When I approached foreign production companies with the idea, Netflix was enthusiastic and expressed an interest in developing the short film into an eight-part series." Another challenge was initiated in this manner, which I gladly accepted," the producer continued.

According to the actor, working as an executive producer was a unique and interesting experience.

If a new film or television series is released, (as an actor) I should concentrate my efforts on conveying the essence of the role being played. As a producer, however, I needed to look at the big picture. According to Jung, "I made a sincere effort to listen to different comments and reflect on what I could have done better to satisfy viewers."

Despite the fact that some criticisms were expected and certainly understandable, Jung hoped that viewers and drama fans would recognize the new efforts being made through "The Silent Sea."

"Because there were not many science fiction projects involving the moon at the time, we did not have enough data and references to consult." But I believed this was an opportunity for all of us, believing that we could establish ourselves as a good reference if we were able to produce the characteristics of the moon in an amazing manner," the enthusiastic producer told the interviewer, according to The Korea Herald.

"The process was terrifying, but we were proud of ourselves after we finished filming the scenes," Jung continued. After that, Jung went into detail about each of the characters featured in the series.

"When the short film was selected to be made into a television series, I felt it was appropriate for me not to appear in the series. "I was overjoyed when Gong Yoo was chosen to play the captain of the space explorers, and I had no intention of becoming involved in the series as an actor," Jung told The Korea Herald.

In the past, during the production stage, Jung has questioned himself about the next season; however, he has stated that he is more concerned with ways to meet viewers' expectations and improve the series at the moment.

According to FlixPatrol, the eight-part series debuted on Netflix on December 24, 2021, and immediately rose to the fifth spot on the company's global TV show list.
