Andrew Wiggins, a forward for the Golden State Warriors, has said he "will never forget" K-pop sensation BamBam, whose social media influence helped him become an NBA All-Star for the first time.
For the first time in his eight-year career, Wiggins has been chosen an All-Star, and BamBam played a key role in his selection.
The use of hashtags with the players' names was one of the most popular ways for fans to vote for the All-Star Game starters on Twitter. The Warriors' social marketing staff teamed up with BamBam to enhance Wiggins' score, taking advantage of his 9 million Twitter followers.
The Warriors' social media staff chose January 7 as the day for BamBam to promote Wiggins to his 9.6 million followers. Because votes were counted twice that day, it was a historic day.
BamBam's remark went viral in the active K-pop scene, becoming Thailand's No. 1 trending issue and earning him third place in the West frontcourt.
“I thought it was pretty cool. He’s a very popular guy, he helped me get a ton of votes,” Wiggins said. “I didn’t know who he was before, but now I will never forget him.
Wiggins, the former No. 1 overall NBA Draft pick, has excelled with the Golden State Warriors after a disappointing start to his NBA career with the Minnesota Timberwolves. In a less voluminous offensive role, his efficiency has skyrocketed, and he has established himself as a key member of the Warriors' top-ranked defense.
It should be emphasized that Wiggins received votes from 46 players and several members of the media, but the fans wanted him, and they will have him on February 20.
