BLACKPINK’s Rosé shines on her own

Her solo singles and ‘Sea of Hope’ elevated her public profile.

She may be best known as the main vocalist and lead dancer of the multi-platinum selling girl group BLACKPINK, but Rosé is already making a name for herself as a solo artist.

Rosé made her solo debut in March 2021 with the single album R, which was bannered by the lead single “On the Ground.” Its official music video earned 100 million views in a little over a week, smashing the record set by her fellow BLACKPINK member Jennie. About four months later, the video crossed the 100 million mark, making Rosé the first Korean female artist to achieve that milestone in 2021. Meanwhile, her second solo MV for “Gone” has since earned 100 million views and counting.

She nabbed five music show wins for “On the Ground,” the first of which was from Show Champion. It also marked her first win as a soloist.

Rosé’s appearances on the JTBC variety show Sea of Hope have also been well-received. Sea of Hope is a show in which various celebrities perform and prepare food for guests at a seaside bar. The cast includes AKMU’s Lee Suhyun, Kim Go Eun, Lee Dong Wook, Lee Ji Ah, SHINee’s Onew, and Yoon Jong Shin. Other celebrities also drop by sometimes.

In her latest appearance, Rosé played a little piano music (Yiruma’s “River Flows in You”) for everyone. She also accompanied herself on the guitar while singing a gorgeous rendition of Paramore’s “The Only Exception.”

Her first appearance on the show endeared her to many people, including American singer-songwriter John Mayer. She covered the RB-oriented ballad “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room,” which originally appeared on his third album Continuum.

BLINKs were blown away by her stunning vocals, and so was John Mayer. After watching a video of her performance, he posted a screenshot from it on his Instagram Stories with the caption, “This is gorgeous.”

She responded to the compliment by reposting his story and adding the words, “Whaat…? No way… Pinch me.”

He also logged into Twitter to like and retweet a video of her singing his song, which is kind of a big deal, since he hadn’t liked a tweet since 2018. He later sent her an electric guitar as a thank-you, which fans found out about when Rosé shared photos of it on Instagram.

It’s from the Silver Sky collection, the blues heartthrob’s collaboration with PRS Guitars. In a previous interview about the collaboration, he said that it’s always been a dream of his to design a guitar that includes some of his favorite vintage specifications, but with a modern twist.

“After two years of study and refinement, the Silver Sky is my vision of what a reboot of the electric guitar should feel and look like,” he said.

He gifted Rosé the Roxy Pink variant, which is in her favorite color, baby pink. According to the website of Sweetwater Sound (an online store for music equipment), it costs 2,500 USD or 2,881,800.00 South Korean won. It’s the exact same variant he used when he was promoting his new album Sob Rock.

The Roxy Pink variant comes with a rosewood fingerboard, complete with 7.25” radius and small bird inlays. Aside from that, it has the same specs as the original, with an alder body and maple neck.

Rosé loves playing the guitar, so it was the perfect gift for her. BLINKs everywhere can’t wait to hear all the hits she’ll compose with it!
