Despite the fact that the upcoming JTBC drama "Thirty-Nine" appears to be a standard romance, director Kim Sang-ho believes it is far more profound than that.
"In South Korea, many people consider that the age of 39 is a little unusual. I believe that 39 is a little too early to have something significant completed, but it is not too late to begin something completely new. According to Kim, who spoke at an online press conference on Wednesday, "the drama primarily focuses on a trio of best friends and their relationship on the verge of approaching 40, but it is more about how their lives progress with lovers, families, and relatives."
In South Korea, the age of 40 is often referred to as "bulhok," which literally translates as "resisting temptation," and it is associated with the hope that one will be able to resist any temptation involving any form of vice. The series revolves around three 39-year-old women, and it follows their preparations towards reaching the age of 40.
Having returned to the small screen for the first time in two years following the success of the smash-hit series "Crash Landing on You," actor Son Ye-jin, who plays chief dermatologist Cha Mi-jo, believes she met the cast of "Thirty-Nine" at exactly the right time, almost as if it were a fate that she did.
"I thoroughly appreciated every aspect of the writing. I was around the same age as Mi-jo, and there were a lot of aspects about the character that I could readily connect with. When I was reading the scripts, I was taken aback since parts of Mi-words jo's were almost verbatim to the way I spoke in my everyday life," Son remarked.
To make matters worse, the actor pondered aloud if the author, Yoo Young-a, had put a surveillance camera in his home.
Jeon Mi-do, who shot to international prominence in another Korean drama success, "Hospital Playlist," co-stars as Jeong Chan-young, a skilled acting trainer who works with actors from all over the world.
"I am aware that some drama fans are concerned about my well-being because of my past employment as a doctor," says the actor. My character in 'Thirty-Nine' had a significant transformation after becoming a terminally sick patient. "I am certain that many perspectives will be offered, and I am hopeful that viewers will respond with love and support as they did in 'Hospital Playlist,'" the actor continued.
Kim Ji-Hyun, who co-stars as Jang Joo-hee, the manager of a cosmetics company, was taken aback by how quickly the three actors were able to develop close to each other.
"Even though Jeon and I have known each other for ten years, this was my first experience working with Son. " During the COVID-19 epidemic, we were unable to spend much quiet time together, such as eating supper together. It shocked me how fast we grew connected to one another and how soon we were able to develop incredible synergy in real life. In the event that a topic is presented, it appears that the dialogue will not be concluded in a short period of time. According to Kim, "I believe that our friendship may be felt by those who watch us on television."
Beginning on February 16 at 10:30 p.m. ET on JTBC, the 12-part series will premiere. Twenty-Nine will also be accessible on local streaming platform Tving as well as on worldwide streaming provider Netflix starting on March 19.
