Kangnam made a live YouTube broadcast on February 26 to reveal the results of his naturalization test.
Kangnam is the son of a Japanese father and a Korean mother and was born in Japan. In 2011, he joined the group M.I.B, which split in 2016. He rose to fame as a variety show host, and in 2019, he married Lee Sang Hwa, a retired speed skater. He expressed his ambition to become a naturalized South Korean citizen after his marriage.
He relayed the bad news that he had failed the first stage of the process in October. He reapplied, and on February 25, after passing the written exam, he had his final interview.
"I finished my last naturalization interview test yesterday," Kangnam remarked during the live broadcast. I received the result this morning via KakaoTalk, but instead of looking at it, I sent it to the staff. I'm still unsure of the outcome."
He discussed a little about the naturalization procedure before looking at the findings live on-air. "I couldn't hear the interviewer very well because we were wearing masks and there was glass between us due of COVID-19," he explained. "I told them it was a boiler when they inquired what was heating the flooring, and they busted out laughing." They then inquired about the traditional term, which I informed them was ondol. The interview took place in a pleasant environment. I was scared while singing the anthem, so I raced through it... despite the fact that I'm a singer."
"I had to take a cheongsimhwan [a type of calming tablet] before going to the interview, and I had to take one again today," he continued. My heart feels like it's going to burst. I wouldn't be so nervous if I was more confident, but I'm halfway there. But I'm glad that so many people are rooting for me."
Kangnam talked about what he planned to achieve after becoming a citizen. "I can change my name, acquire insurance, and get a resident registration card at the dong [neighborhood] office." For my name, I have a lot of alternatives. I could just keep the name 'Kang Nam,' or I could take my mother's last name and go with 'Kwon Kang Nam,' or I could take my wife's last name and go with 'Lee Kang Nam,' or I could entirely change the name 'Kangnam.'"
He couldn't look directly when it came time to present the results because he was so frightened. When he found out he had passed, he said, "What do I do now?" "Everyone, thank you so much," he continued. Kangnam has finally been naturalized after three years. "Honey!" he exclaimed, "It seems like my blood is flowing to the floor!" Mom! In-laws, in-laws, in-laws, in-laws, in-laws, in-laws, in ”
After that, the production team unveiled a pre-recorded celebratory video. "You've passed the naturalization exam," Kangnam's mother stated in it. You've put in a lot of effort, and I congratulate you on becoming a Korean. Enjoy your stay in Korea. "You did a great job," he said to his friends and acquaintances in the video.
