A BTS fan analyzes the group's 2021 MUSTER

Find out what OT7 "Chicken Noodle Soup" and "Daechwita" represent.

Last June 13 and 14, BTS celebrated their eighth anniversary with two concerts titled 2021 MUSTER SOWOOZOO. They performed their old and new hits, with a couple of special numbers tacked onto the setlist.

On day one, they performed an OT7 version of “Daechwita,” a single off SUGA’s second mixtape D-2, which he released under his second stage name AgustD.

On day two, j-hope led the other six in a performance of his solo track “Chicken Noodle Soup.” The original version of the song featured Latina rapper Becky G, but the SOWOOZOO version saw the rest of Bangtan take over for her.

In a review of both days of SOWOOZOO (which she posted on her own Facebook page) a Filipino ARMY raised some interesting points about the performances.

“Daechwita is a traditional Korean genre from the late Joseon dynasty,” writes Rachel Bonifacio, a life coach and mental health counselor based in the Philippines. “It was used during royalty processions. It’s still used today, but only during special occasions and for military purposes.”

According to Bonifacio’s analysis, day one of SOWOOZOO was probably supposed to be the show’s South Korean version.

“The ‘Daechwita’ MV tells a personal story—that of AgustD vs. himself—but when BTS performed it together on day one, the performance was a representation of traditional Korean culture. BTS doing it as a group was meant to symbolize them embracing their heritage.”

Day two was billed as the World Tour version of the show, and Bonifacio says the OT7 performance of Chicken Noodle Soup was a perfect fit for it.

“ ‘Chicken Noodle Soup’ is a resurrection of a 2006 song featuring artists from Harlem, New York. The j-hope and Becky G version is about being proud of who you are, where you're from, and the work you do.

“In the live performance with all seven members, you’ll see people from all walks of life dancing with BTS. People of different ages, genders, and races. Jimin and RM rapped and sang in Spanish, and Jungkook did Becky G's English verse,” she added.

Incorporating a hidden message into their setlist—that’s BTS for you. There's always a deeper meaning behind whatever they do.
