Park Geun-Hye Returns Home After Prison Sentence

She was also treated for chronic illnesses towards the end of her sentence.

Park Geun-hye, the former president of South Korea, was released from hospital on Thursday and moved into her new house, after serving four years and nine months in prison on a variety of corruption charges.

Park made an appearance in front of the Samsung Medical Center, where she has been receiving treatment for chronic diseases since November. She expressed appreciation to the medical personnel for their care and stated she had healed.

"In five years, I will extend my greetings to the general public. I was able to regain my health thanks to all of your efforts. To the medical team and personnel at Samsung Medical Center, I would want to offer my sincere appreciation," Park remarked to media and a mob of fans who had gathered in front of Samsung Medical Center to welcome the former president.

It was Park's first public appearance in five years, following her arrest on March 31, 2017. She has been held since then. Because she had been impeached the previous year, the former president has been serving a 22-year prison sentence on a variety of offenses, including abuse of authority and bribery, since March 2017.

On December 31, the president gave her a special presidential pardon.

Hundreds of fans gathered in front of her home in Dalseong County, Daegu, to welcome her back to the country.

« Looking back, the previous five years have been a very trying period for me to go through. "However, I was able to get through those difficult times by thinking about the day I would return to Dalseong, which was both my political turf and also my emotional home," Park said.

In addition, the former president made a remark that may have been seen as a hint to a possible political comeback.

"While serving as president, I tried my best for the nation and the people, but I still have a dream that I have not been able to realize, and I trust that others will now take on their roles to help me reach those goals," Park stated.

"I would like to offer a tiny amount of assistance to the outstanding individuals who are working to promote Daegu and contribute to the growth of the country."

One of the most memorable moments of the address came when a guy in his 30s disrupted it by throwing a soju bottle at President Park. The bottle was thrown to the ground around 5 to 10 meters distant from Park's location. There were no injuries.

During her presentation to the general public, Park made no mention of President-elect Yoon Suk-yeol, who investigated Park's corruption claims, which ultimately led to her impeachment, removal from office, and incarceration in 2017 as a result of her actions.

Earlier in the day, Yoon expressed his delight at Park's release from the hospital and promised to pay her a visit when he returns to Daegu.

According to Yoon, the news "provides assurance that Park has recovered her health and is going home."

"I have plans to visit to a number of different locations next week... To ensure her health is in good shape, we shall pay her a visit."

Yoon also stated that he will invite Park to his inauguration ceremony on May 10th, as he has done in the past with all previous presidents of South Korea.

Yoon, who served as prosecutor general for the incumbent liberal Moon Jae-in government, resigned following a disagreement with Moon over the conduct of investigations of the president's close advisers. Moon was upset with Yoon's conduct. Park is also a member of the conservative People Power Party, which he represented in the presidential election. He was elected as the party's presidential candidate.

Yoo Young-ha, Park's confidant and lawyer, revealed that the reason for her transferring to Dalseong County in Daegu is because the region is where she "first launched her political career," according to Yoo.

"She rose to the position of president after spending four terms as a member of the legislature representing this region. "She has always considered (this location) to be her hometown," Yoo explained.
