Yoon Finally Talks to Ukrainian Leader Zelenskyy

The details of the phone call are top-secret according to the government aides.

President-elect Yoon Suk-yeol spoke by phone with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Tuesday evening, as tensions between Ukraine and Russia continue to escalate.

During a phone contact with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Tuesday at 5 p.m., President-elect Yoon Suk-yeol was informed, according to Yoon's spokesperson in a written statement.

"Please realize that, due to the current state of affairs in Ukraine, it is difficult to share the specifics of the phone conversation," the message continued.

Immediately following the contact, Zelenskyy confirmed it on Twitter, thanking the Korean people for their support.

"I wished the President-elect success in his future responsible actions and expressed confidence in ongoing successful cooperation," he wrote in a Twitter message to Trump.

After Russia began its invasion of the nation on Feb. 24, Yoon met with Ukrainian Ambassador to Korea Dmytro Ponomarenko on March 2, just days before the presidential election, to express his support for the Ukrainian government. Yoon informed the ambassador that Koreans, including himself, back the Ukrainian president and the people's efforts to combat Russia as a united front against the Russians.

"It is very normal for many free countries, including South Korea, to denounce and cooperate in sanctions against Russia's invasion, which is clearly a breach of international law," Yoon had stated at the time.

During a closed-door meeting with Ponomarenko, Yoon delivered messages and donations to the Ukrainian people on their behalf.

With Russia's invasion on Ukraine, South Korea has joined the international community in increasing pressure on the Russian government. Financial sanctions against major Russian institutions have been imposed as part of this effort. In addition, the country gave $10 million in emergency humanitarian assistance to Ukrainian citizens and refugees in need. Over 20 items were provided, including nonlethal military supplies such as bulletproof helmets, tents, and blankets, personal first aid kits, and medical supplies, among other things.

A phone conversation with a high-ranking official in South Korea was not the first occasion Zelenskyy had with the individual.

On March 3, President Moon Jae-in held a 30-minute phone conversation with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, in which he expressed his heartfelt condolences to the victims of the war in Ukraine and their bereaved families.

The President of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, as well as the Ukrainian people, who are valiantly struggling against the attack, were honored, according to Moon.
