Luna Now Performs on Broadway for K-Pop Themed Production

She has been in the music industry even before f(x) was disbanded.

In October, after five years on a smaller stage, "Kpop," an original musical about what it takes to be a K-pop star, will make its Broadway debut. The show's popularity has increased in tandem with the global rise of Korean music over the past five years.

The immersive off-Broadway production "Kpop" launched in the fall of 2017 as part of the New York Fashion Week. The show was nominated for seven Drama Desk Awards and awarded the 2018 Richard Rodgers Award, three Lucille Lortel Awards, including best musical, the Off Broadway Alliance Award, and three Lucille Lortel Award nominations. It also garnered three Lucille Lortel Award nominations. It was devised by the theatrical company Woodshed Collective and playwright Jason Kim, with music and lyrics by Helen Park and Max Vernon, and was produced by Woodshed Collective and Jason Kim.

At a press conference held at the Korean Cultural Center New York on Wednesday, "Kpop" composer Park described the film as "an original story of global superstars, putting everything on the line for a special one-night-only concert event, during which one music idol's inner struggle threatens to demolish an entertainment powerhouse." "Kpop" is a South Korean musical about global superstars.

According to the producers, "the world we explore in 'Kpop' is competitive, persistent in its pursuit of perfection, full of passionate, enormously ambitious artists, and ultimately a source of joy for the audience to help grow the world."

"The driving reason behind this production of Kpop has always been to blend the lively, exuberant, and hugely entertaining world of K-pop with the compelling storytelling of a Broadway musical," the show's two producers Tim Forbes and Joey Parnes said in a joint statement.

A K-pop sensation named Luna, who was formerly the lead vocalist of the now-defunct girl group f(x), makes her Broadway debut in the production as MwE, one of three K-pop stars that appear onstage. "Legally Blonde" and "In the Heights" are among the foreign musicals she has appeared in in Korea, as well as original and Korean versions of those musicals.

"Broadway symbolizes the height of my professional achievement in this industry. As a result, being able to share my culture with the audiences who come to watch a Broadway production is the greatest honor of my life," Luna remarked.

This is the first time that the whole cast of "Kpop" has been revealed.

Preview performances will begin on October 13 at the Circle on the Square Theatre in New York City and will run for a total of ten days. The grand opening is scheduled for Nov. 20.
