The Korean-American Economy in Transition Period, Hallyu is the Answer

Korean-American Economy in Need of New Growth Engines

In 1903, the Korean-American Economy was born with the sweat and tears of contract workers on a sugar cane farm in Hawaii.

We have shared the history of the development of the Korean immigrant community for more than 120 years.

The Korean economy has continued to grow along the lines of the service industry - manufacturing industry - financial industry - information and communication industry. The size of the Korean-American economy is estimated to be about 8% of Korea's gross national income. The economic power of Korean-American ranks 65th in the world, similar to that of Ecuador.

As such, the economic power of Koreans has grown through a partnership with Korea, the home country, as well as the central axis leading the economy of 5.8 million overseas Koreans. However, the pandemic situation that lasted more than a year and a half hit the traditional Korean economy.

The pandemic has given the Korean community the task of discovering new growth engines.

Is Hallyu the Answer?

The U.S. cultural contents market is the world's largest at $880 billion as of 2019. Although the Korean market, which focuses on domestic consumption, is ranked as the 7th largest in the world, it still has a long way to go compared to the US.

The global business of the Korean entertainment and content industry is still in its infancy. Experts agree that global players are needed to enter overseas markets and compete with major players. It is also pointed out that it is necessary to pioneer an online Hallyu distribution platform that connects supply and demand along the value chain.

The use of blockchain, big data, and artificial intelligence, which are the core technologies of the 4th industrial revolution, has made platform construction much easier. There are many outstanding Korean talents recognized in Hollywood, the holy city of entertainment, Silicon Valley, the mecca of the IT industry, and New York, the world's financial center.

If the pioneering spirit of the first generation and the expertise of the second generation show synergy, the Hallyu wave as a new growth engineWe can establish a new direction for the Korean-American economy in transition. Yes, Hallyu is the answer.
