Red Velvet’s Wendy reveals she's rusty ahead of August comeback

Their sixth mini album marks her return to group promotions.

Red Velvet’s Wendy isn’t terribly fond of social media. But she has found another way to connect with fans.

She’s the new host of the famous nighttime radio show Young Street on SBS, which airs every day from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM KST. Wendy began her new job last July 12.

On the July 26 episode, the show’s production staff set up a fun segment where Wendy ended up interviewing herself. They told her that someone named Son Seung Wan—which is her birth name—would be that evening’s guest.

“When they told me the guest’s name, I didn’t realize they were talking about me,” she said. “I just thought someone with a name similar to mine was coming on the show. When they said it was me, I was like, ‘It’s me?’”

Wendy said she answers to her birth name and her stage name. “At home, they call me Seung Wan, but I like Wendy as well. No matter which name people use when they call me, I turn around. People can call me whatever they feel most comfortable with.”

Wendy also talked about Red Velvet’s upcoming comeback. The group will release their sixth mini album Queendom on August 16 at 6:00 PM KST. It’s their first comeback in over a year, after the final part of their The ReVe Festival album series dropped in December 2019.

In that same month, Wendy was involved in a stage accident while they were rehearsing for the 2019 SBS Gayo Daejun. She fell from a platform and sustained facial injuries. Wendy also fractured her pelvis and wrist, so she went on hiatus to reover.

She made her partial return to the group when Red Velvet released the SM Station track “Milky Way,” which was a cover of a song that appeared on BoA’s third album in 2003. Wendy resumed promoting almost one year after her accident. She eventually became the first Red Velvet member to debut as a soloist with the EP Like Water last April.

Wendy shared that when the logo teaser for their comeback was posted, she was just as excited as the fans were. “It was the first time in a year and eight months that a group video of us was uploaded. It felt strange, and I texted the members to tell them that. The fans said their hearts beat faster when they saw the teaser. Since they waited a long time for us, we’re going to come back with a good image and good music.”

She added that preparing for the comeback wasn’t easy because she was a little rusty after having been out of the game for so long.

“Since it had been a while, there were some parts that felt unfamiliar or difficult, but it’s fun. Now that it’s been revealed, I’m excited. When we filmed my archive video, I had to act surprised. So when I reviewed the footage, I realized that I never closed my mouth. It was always at least half-opened. They told me to act surprised and curious, so I kept saying ‘ooh.’”

How do you feel about Red Velvet’s return? Are you pumped like Wendy is? Stay tuned for more updates!
