Today, JYP Entertainment confirmed reports that Young K—the bassist, main rapper, and main vocalist of the band DAY6—is preparing to release an album of his own. The album will mark his official solo debut, six years after he debuted in DAY6.

However, his agency denied that it will come out this September.

“The detailed schedule has not been determined,” a representative from JYP Entertainment told reporters. “We will make an announcement once it is confirmed.”

Young K was born Kang Young Hyun on December 19, 1993. He was raised in Ilsan, South Korea but eventually moved to Toronto, Canada, where he studied at York Mills Collegiate Institute. The entire time he lived there, he went by his English name Brian Kang. He flew back to South Korea and became a JYP Entertainment trainee in 2010.

On September 7, 2017, he took the name Young K and made his debut in DAY6. Their first EP The Day was bannered by the hit “Congratulations.” They went on to have a string of successful singles, most of which Young K had a hand in writing.

In August 2020, Young K formed a DAY6 sub-unit named Even of Day, in which he was joined by his bandmates Dowoon and Wonpil. Their first EP The Book of Us: Gluon and single “Where the Sea Sleeps” dropped in the same month. Most recently he collaborated with Filipino band Ben Ben on a special version of their single “Leaves.”

Young K is also known as DAY6’s main songwriter. So far, he has over 130 songs registered with the Korea Music Copyright Association. His debut solo album will be packed with songs he wrote himself.
