Six times SEVENTEEN, SKZ, and The Boyz sang girl group songs

Not releasing studio versions of these covers was a mistake.

SEVENTEEN, Stray Kids, and The Boyz are three of the most talented boy groups in K-Pop today. Not only are they capable of delivering great renditions of their own hits, but they’re also known for flipping songs by some of South Korea’s best-loved girl groups.

Here are six times they made girl group songs their own.

1. SEVENTEEN – Girl Group Medley (April 16, 2016)

This medley was a cultural reset. Before SEVENTEEN performed it on the MBC program Show! Music Core five years ago, boy groups covering songs by their female counterparts would change the choreography to make it more masculine. Some male idols would even wear women’s clothing when singing girl group songs, which some netizens dubbed “disrespectful” and “unprofessional.” With their take on songs by established girl groups like GFRIEND and Girls’ Generation, SEVENTEEN changed all that. After they did this medley, other boy groups realized they could do the same thing.

2. MXM, Samuel, Stray Kids, The Boyz – Bboom Bboom (June 18, 2017)

Some of you may have forgotten about this performance, so we decided to bring it back. When they were rookies, some Stray Kids and The Boyz members covered MOMOLAND’s “Bboom Bboom” with MXM (a duo composed of pre-AB6IX Donghyun and Youngmin) and soloist Kim Samuel. They all donned sporty outfits for this Inkigayo special stage, which was organized in honor of the 2018 World Cup. SKZ members Bang Chan, Han, and Hyunjin looked every bit, as did TBZ Haknyeon, Q, and Younghoon.

“Bboom Bboom” is a dance-pop and electro-swing song that’s arguably the MLD Entertainment girl group’s biggest hit. It was certified platinum by Gaon Chart in August 2018, when it earned 100 million streams. The song was the first one (and second overall) by a female artist to get a platinum certification from the Gaon Chart.

3. SEVENTEEN – Décalcomanie (July 4, 2017)

MAMAMOO’s “Décalcomanie” is considered a tough song to sing, and for good reason. When it was released in 2016, it was considered a departure for the four-piece girl group. Although the melody line still had the retro sound Hwasa, Moonbyul, Solar, and Wheein were known for; the bass line featured a mid-tempo drumbeat. That, combined with the girls’ powerful vocals, made it an instant hit.

Although many idols love this song, not all of them have the guts—not to mention the chops—to do it justice. Mad props to SEVENTEEN for being brave enough to take on “Décalcomanie” and slay it!

4. The Boyz – The Boys (October 11, 2018)

Could there be a more perfect song for the Cre.ker Entertainment group to cover than this Girls’ Generation hit? When The Boyz sang “The Boys” in front of a sold-out crowd at Thailand’s Impact Arena for KCON 2018, they brought down the house. Their performance had fans buzzing. Some even said they wanted Girls’ Generation to reunite just so The Boyz could do the song with them.

“The Boys” appeared on Girls’ Generation’s third Korean-language studio album, which was released in 2011. An English version was released in the US in December that same year, in an attempt by their agency to expand the group's popularity outside South Korea.

As proven by their 2020 appearance on a show called Radio Idol Planet, the significance of their group’s name isn’t lost on Juyeon and Younghoon at all. “We like our name as it reminds people of SNSD sunbaenim’s music, and somehow we made it more meaningful,” they said.

5. The Boyz – What is Love (July 12, 2019)

The uptempo ditty “What is Love” is one of TWICE’s biggest hits. It got 18 certified all-kills and was named Song of the Year at the 2018 MAMA. Earlier this year, the song got a second wind because of the short-form video sharing platform TikTok. At one point, it was one of the most-used sounds on TikTok, with over 900,000 videos using it.

Not only was the song’s resurgence in popularity a pleasant surprise for ONCEs and the TWICE members themselves, but it also gave this really cute cover by The Boyz a boost.

6. Stray Kids – FANCY (July 28, 2019)

Stray Kids and TWICE are both under JYP Entertainment, which makes it easy for the former to cover the latter’s songs. Stray Kids have done “Dance the Night Away” and “Like Ooh-Ahh,” but this cover is especially close to our hearts because of maknae I.N.’s “shining moment.” Watch it and you’ll see what we mean!
