Fourth generation boy group ENHYPEN has been crushing it lately. Their first two EPs—BORDER: DAY ONE and BORDER: CARNIVAL—both went double platinum in their native South Korea. They’ve since earned several music show wins, as well as various trophies from the Gaon Chart Music Awards, the Golden Disc Awards, the Seoul Music Awards, and The Fact Music Awards.
Everyone in ENHYPEN played a big part in their success, but their mat-hyung or eldest member Heeseung is one of the group’s most passionate members. According to Filipino broadcaster Trish Roque, who discovered them through the survival show I-LAND, he’s dedicated to his work. She thinks that enables him to set a good example for Jay, Jake, Sunghoon, Sunoo, and their lone Japanese member Ni-ki.
“As the oldest in the group, Heeseung is a reliable hyung to his members. He’s also very hardworking, sometimes to a fault. But that’s because he’s a perfectionist and he wants to get better with every performance,” she says.
When he sat down with Weverse Magazine a while back for an exclusive interview, Heeseung acknowledged his perfectionism.
“Some people think deeply about one thing, and others think about a lot of things. I’m both, and it actually serves me well when I practice. That’s because when you dance and sing, you have to pay attention to numerous things, each of which requires a ‘deep dive’ of its own. But at night, this kind of personality fills my head with many thoughts. In terms of music, ‘I hope I come off like this’ or ‘I’ll try something like this tomorrow.’ It gets a bit hard at moments when I think I come up short. But what I can say for certain is that I don’t feel burdened by these things. I think you have to go through these things without ifs and buts.”
In another, more recent interview, the dancer and vocalist revealed what helps him stay motivated. Like most artistic, creative people, he can be emotional at times. Now, if he were the kind of guy who struggles to keep his emotions in check, he’d be in big trouble. Fortunately, he has figured out how to make his emotions work for him.
“This may sound tricky, but I get motivation from my own emotions,” he shared. “For example, if I have a goal, I concentrate on what I feel when I think about it.”
Whether it’s anger, passion, or something different but equally intense, Heeseung uses what he’s feeling as a source of strength. Because he was able to come up with an effective way to channel his emotions properly, they’ve become assets to him. Instead of overwhelming him, his emotions give Heeseung power. His emotions give him that extra push he needs to keep doing his best to achieve his goals—whatever they may be.
His fans, Trish included, want nothing but the best for him.
“I’m excited to see Heeseung expand his horizons,” she says. “I’d like to see him try writing and producing music in the future. It would also be a lot of fun to see him rap again, like he did when ENHYPEN covered BTS’s ‘Boy in Luv’ at their fan meeting. He’s such an all-rounder and I know he’ll succeed at anything he wants to try.”
In the meantime, ENHYPEN is preparing to make a comeback with their first full-length album DIMENSION: DILEMMA. Earlier this month, the boys’ record label dropped three concept films for each version of their album. Watch them below.
