Min Heejin, The Brain Behind SM's Iconic Comebacks, Shares Why She Left the Agency

Burnout was real and severe on her end to the point she contemplated stopping altogether.

Min Hee Jin, HYBE's Chief Brand Officer (CBO), recently made a guest appearance on tvN's "You Quiz on the Block" show.

The first episode of the variety show, which aired on December 1, featured "people who will achieve big things next year," and one of the guests was Min Hee Jin, who had recently launched a new HYBE sub-label known as ADOR. Last month, HYBE announced that ADOR would debut a new girl group in 2022, with the majority of the members being recruited through their "Plus Global Audition" in 2019.

In her previous position as creative director and board entertainment at SM Entertainment, where she worked for 17 years, Min Hee Jin brought her experience and expertise to HYBE.

According to Min Hee Jin, when asked why she had decided to leave the agency after nearly two decades, she explained that she had become burned out as a result of pushing herself too hard during her time there. "By the time I was promoted to director, I had already become extremely exhausted," she explained further. "I was putting in too many hours. Due to the fact that, back then, we would sometimes film four or five music videos and release four or five albums in the span of a month."

"I think I put everything I had into my work during my twenties and thirties," Min Hee Jin continued. I'd never taken a proper vacation before this. The stress had gotten to me to the point where I was considering quitting my job."

After that, she continued, "When I first brought up the subject of leaving the company, [SM Entertainment founder Lee Soo Man] and I sobbed together." "However, after that, I began to receive phone calls from other businesses." HYBE was one of the first companies to get in touch with me."

On the subject of ADOR's upcoming girl group, Min Hee Jin expressed her excitement by stating, "I'm preparing [for the new girl group] with extreme confidence," before revealing that she had the song for the group's debut ready two years ago.

Min Hee Jin continued, "I definitely expect them to take things in a new and different direction [in terms of the K-pop scene]," when asked about her expectations for the group. [Their debut] will hopefully take place within the next year, and I hope to show you as soon as possible."

Min Heejin was the one responsible for some of the most iconic SM artists' comebacks of the recent years, such as f(x)'s Red Light, NCT U's The 7th Sense, EXO's Lotto, Girls Generation's Holiday, Red Velvet's Red Flavor, and more.
