SM Entertainment has confirmed the rumors about Taeyeon. The former leader and main vocalist of Girls’ Generation will make her long-awaited solo comeback on July 6 with her new single “Weekend.”
This marks Taeyeon’s first new song as a lead artist since “#GrlsSpkOut (featuring Chanmina),” which she released in 2020. Before that, she was a featured artist on Taemin’s third Korean EP Advice, where she sang on the track “If I Could Tell You.”
Taeyeon also did two collaborations in 2020—“Let Me Go (with Crush),” which appeared on the singer’s fourth EP withHER, and a duet version of Lee Seungchul’s “My Love,” from his 35th anniversary album of the same title.
In a press release (which they dropped alongside a teaser for the song), her agency described “Weekend” as a disco-pop song that combines the “exciting sound of a guitar with retro synth sounds.”
The lyrics will convey one’s desire to leave a repetitive daily life behind when the weekend comes. According to SM Entertainment, they expect the song to be a hit in Korea as well as in other countries, thanks largely in part to Taeyeon’s soaring vocals and gentle, singing-style rap.
“Weekend” will be available for streaming on July 6, 6:00 PM KST via the usual suspects—digital music platforms like Apple Music, Genie, MelOn, and Spotify.
Taeyeon’s birth name is Kim Taeyeon, and in 2007 she debuted in the SM Entertainment girl group Girls’ Generation. As part of that group and as a solist, she has sold over a million physical albums and 20 million digital singles to date.
