Korean Actors Celebrate "Drive My Car" Win at the Oscars

They are cast members for this foreign language film from Japan.

There were three Korean actors in attendance at the 94th Academy Awards ceremony on Monday to celebrate the Japanese film "Drive My Car," directed by Ryusuke Hamaguchi, earning the best international feature film award. Park Yu-rim, Jin Dae-yon, and Ahn Hwi-tae were among those in attendance.

During Hamaguchi's acceptance speech, the filmmaker expressed his appreciation for the performers, particularly the three Korean actors who appeared in the film.

"I'd also like to express my gratitude to the actors present. "Thank you very much, Nishijima Hidetoshi, Okada Masaki, Kirishima Reika, Park Yu-rim, Jin Dae-yeon, Ahn Hwi-tae, and Sonia Yuan," the director stated in Japanese, addressing the cast and crew.

Yusuke Kafuku, a middle-aged stage performer and director, is introduced in the film, which is based on the short story collection "Men Without Women" written by renowned Japanese novelist Haruki Murakami. He has been filled with regret since his wife's death, which he attributes in part to his attempts to avoid having a talk with her. His dream comes true when he is given the opportunity to direct a multilingual adaptation of Chekhov's play "Uncle Vanya" with a large number of non-Japanese performers at a festival in Hiroshima. While working as a director, he meets Miura Toko, a lady who works as a driver.

Lee Yoon-na was portrayed by Park, who played a Korean actress who is deaf, and Ahn was portrayed by Korean actor Ryu Jeong-eui, who played a role in Chekhov's bilingual adaptation of the play. Jin played Gong Yoon-soo, a member of the play's production team who works closely with Yusuke on a variety of projects. Yoon-soo is also the spouse of Yoon-na, who plays a deaf actress in the film, and they have two children together.

"Drive My Car" was also nominated for three more Academy Awards, although it did not win any of them. The film was nominated for best picture, best director, and best adapted screenplay.
