In a bid to reach the global market, Naver Webtoon is set to launch its own webcomic about K-Pop superstars BTS.
“Collaborating with those who have a global fandom, we will be launching a super casting project, where we will create locally made webcomics and other intellectual property content,” Naver said in a statement.
Naver’s first partners for that project are DC Comics (one of the largest and oldest American comic book companies) and HYBE Labels, the agency behind BTS. Together with those companies, Naver will focus on digital comics, which global video streaming services such as Netflix have been adapting into films and TV shows.
This won’t be the first time for Naver Webtoon to work with BTS. Back in 2019, the company published The Most Beautiful Moment in Life Part 0: Save Me. Named after the boy group’s 2016 hit “Save Me,” it consists of one prologue and 15 regular installments and revolves around the alter egos of the BTS members. Each character bears the real name of each member.
Save Me tells the story of protagonist Kim Seokjin (based on BTS’s Jin), who’s trapped in a time loop. He’s tasked with saving his six best friends in order to escape from said loop. The webtoon is part of the BU or BTS Universe, an alternate universe featuring most of the group’s output. It’s available in several different languages, including English and Korean. By the time the final installment was released, the webtoon had earned over 50 million views.
Aside from a story based on BTS, Naver Webtoon will also create digital comics based on other HYBE Labels artists. Those artists include BTS’s Big Hit Music hoobaes TOMORROW X TOGETHER, as well as the groups under Belift Lab (ENHYPEN), Pledis Entertainment (Fromis_9, NU’EST, SEVENTEEN), and more.
At the moment, not many details regarding the exact content of Naver’s upcoming slate of webtoons have been revealed. However, they will most likely be stories featuring fictionalized versions of the artists, like Save Me. Another topic they can focus on is the real-life trials and triumphs of different HYBE Labels artists.
Observers say this collaboration is Naver Webtoon’s way of making sure it holds on to its status as South Korea’s No. 1 webtoon platform. (Kakao Entertainment Corp. launched Kakao Webtoon earlier this month, to rave reviews from netizens.)
Naver Webtoon came on the scene in 2004. A decade later, Naver moved to expand it internationally. It also acquired Wattpad Studio, the world’s biggest webnovel platform, and merged Naver Webtoon Studio to create Wattpad Webtoon Studios.
At the moment, the combined monthly average users of both platforms is over 167 million, while more than 6 million creators are registered with them.
