New audition show Girls Planet 999 to unveil trainees on July 8

There will be 99 girls from three different countries.

Mnet’s new audition show Girls Planet 999 is coming soon. It will see 99 female contestants—33 Chinese trainees, 33 Japanese trainees, and 33 Korean trainees—go head-to-head for a chance to debut in a new global girl group.

Girls Planet 999 will air its first episode on August 6 and run for a total of 12 weeks, with the finale scheduled for October 22. It will be hosted by 23-year-old actor Yeo Jin Goo, who’s best known for his star turn as the titular character of the thriller Hwayi: A Monster Boy, as well as his roles in K-dramas like Hotel del Luna.

Instead of “judges,” Girls Planet 999 will have “masters,” each of whom will drill the contestants in a different aspect of performing. Aside from K-Pop Masters Sunmi (Wonder Girls) and Tiffany (Girls’ Generation), the show enlisted choreographer Baek Goo Young, who has worked with BoA, EXO’s Kai, SHINee’s Taemin, and TVXQ to be one of two Dance Masters. Jang Joo Hee, who has choreographed dances for IZ*ONE, among other top female stars, will be the other.

Meanwhile, Im Han Byul (a singer and vocal director for EXO, NCT, and Weki Meki) and Jo Ah Young (a vocal coach who has worked with several idol groups including AB6IX and TWICE) have signed on to be the show’s Vocal Masters.

The Girls Planet 999 team enlisted NCSOFT to help them create content and services for fans. The game company’s new fan community platform UNIVERSE will host what they come up with, as well as the international voting system that will be used during the finale. That system will enable viewers from all over the world, not just those from the three countries represented by the trainees, to choose the final nine who will debut.

On July 8, Mnet will reveal the 99 contestants who were chosen from a pool of over 13,000 applicants to compete on the show. Their photos and profiles will be uploaded to a website for all to see, along with their first performance of the show’s theme song.
